The Best Shoes For Your Fall Internship

By Alexia Gonzalez on August 11, 2015

So after much consideration and closet perusing, you’ve finally picked out exactly what you’ll be wearing to the very first day of your highly anticipated fall internship!

Even if your job (yes, an internship is considered a real job), is super casual, you definitely want to keep some formal footwear handy for whatever work-related scenario may arise. Having a pair (or two) of professional shoes in the back of your closet is never a bad idea.

No matter how great your internship outfit is, if you are wearing bad shoes, you will look bad. Footwear is the place where it’s worth dropping some of that hard-earned summer cash. To begin with, buy a pair of shoes in a color that will go with almost anything you wear, ideally in black or brown.

Along with some basic monochromatic colors, you should start your work shoe collection with a few pairs of high-quality kicks. Although it’s okay to pick up a few trendy bargain-priced pieces, I highly recommend that you do not buy cheap shoes when it comes to what you will be wearing to the office.

Think about it — you’ll be wearing these shoes to your internship through the fall and into the cold months, so they have to last and be able to adapt to the changing climate. Regardless of the industry, the typical day for an intern can be pretty hectic.

Whether you’re managing overwhelming workloads, dashing around the office, or running errands, you’ll find that you’re almost always on your feet as an intern. You’ll also likely be walking all over campus and town in them, so if they aren’t comfortable, you’re going to have one miserable semester.

This means that you’re going to have to actually go to the store and try them on like it’s 2003, or that you have to be sure to order them from a site with a stellar return policy.

The shoes should be simple so they don’t stand out from your outfit and make it obvious you’re wearing the same pair of shoes every single day. Not all shoes are created equal, and they can either help or hurt you (literally). Here are some pain-free suggestions; your feet will thank you!

Say “No” To Stilettos

When picking out work shoes, be sure to steer clear of all stilettos. Ladies, trust me when I say that I know and understand the temptation to wear your chicest, fiercest heels to work. As fabulous as you may look, really high heels that are difficult to walk (let alone run) in aren’t practical while interning.

Kitten Heels

These stilettos alternatives are still chic while remaining low to the ground, comfortable, and will still provide an extra lift for ladies who feel as though they are vertically challenged. Whether your outfit consists of pants, a pencil skirt, or a dress, a low, comfortable heel is a must-have.

Boots

At the heart of every closet, there’s a trusty boot that anchors your 9-to-5 wardrobe. Aside from shielding your toes from the frigid air outside, it goes with virtually every piece of business attire. If you’re looking to take your work wardrobe to new heights, consider a sky-high knee-high style or if you simply want to make your cubicle a tad homier, a pair of suede booties will keep you cozy while providing your still sophisticated work look with a bit of an edge.

Statement Flats

Make your flats the event of your outfit. Incorporate some pizzazz into your ensemble with simple, colorful, or embellished flats. Don’t let anyone tell you that a flat shoe can’t steal the show. A chic ballet flat is the ultimate in comfort while still looking professional. They can be dressed up, or dressed down in a solid, neutral color without detracting from your look.

Oxfords

With or without heels, oxfords are too cool for fall. There’s no shoe that makes me feel more “yeah, I got this whole footwear thing figured out.” Don’t be afraid to get a pair made for men – you’d be surprised how dude’s shoes can spice up a lady’s outfit.
